Hi
I tried to create a special user called "shutdown" but it did not worked it out. I gave this account real passward and shell of /usr/sbin/shutdown. When this person needs to shutdown the machine, he/she can just login as the Shutdown user.

Any Ideas What am I missing?

Don't know if this would work, but couldn't you just set the user up with a normal shell and place the shutdown command in the .profile, so that it's executed on login? Or am I missing something too?

You can use KenCunningham suggestion, but you will still need to give super user status to the shutdown user, you can do that by edit "/etc/passwd" and change user id and group id of shutdown user to match user id and group id of root, this is because only root can run "shutdown", then edit .profile of shutdown user to match your needs to do only shutdown or reboot, i.e .profile to shutdown user to perform a reboot cold be something like this:

PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/etc
export PATH
trap 1 2 3 15;
exec init 6
trap 1 2 3 15;

a better and more secure way of doing same thing is using "sudo", or by creating a "special" role to a apply to one or more users with shutdown permission, you can do that with "System Management Console".

Hope This Helps,

Hello F.regal,

Create shutdown user name but insure that user ID and group ID should be equivalent of root,and whenever you want to shutdown the system just login through shutdown user name.It will work.

Thanks,
Ajay
