Sharing ADSL

What is the best solution for sharing ADSL over a Win2K Pro network? Using the NAT feature of RRAS (with a router I presume) and the WinGate software option are being considered. I'd appreciate feedback on the pros and cons of these and other options.

Generally the easiest and best way to share a connection like this across a newtwork is using a Router.

Just take an old machine and install linux on it. Then you get a router and a good firewall if you configure it right. You can take a look at

Cheap Dlink router... about 50$US...
WinGate used to be VERY unsecure.
and having gateway/proxy/firewall on a windows machine means that particular machine will be fully visible from the net. Never a good idea.

So unless you want to spend the week learning how to configure linux, with 50$US you should be all set.

The size if you network is very relavent.

There's no need for NATs and dedicated routers if you only have a small workgroup.

Take one of your Win2K pro machines which is in on your network. Install your ADSL modem and get it connected the internet. Once this is done enable internet connection sharing (ICS) on the pc with the modem installed, ('Sharing' tab in the properties for the internet connection).

Only problem you may have with ICS is it will reconfigure your LAN NIC with an addresses '196.168.0.1'. Also you will need to DCHP enable all the other pc's on the network as this pc will now act as a DHCP server and assign them all IP addresses within the 196.168.0.1->253

So, if you only have a small workgroup and have no worries about changing your IP address structure then this may be an option. To be fair you can change the address range ICS uses but that means a bit if registry editing.
