Hi,
Can anybody help with this. I need to share my modem with two pcs on my network...one using win 2k (the main Pc) the other (win ME).
I do have a nic installed on both....but nothing seems to work. I also need to be able to see both PC on the lan!
Help!

let's see... i can help only a bit, but it might be enough to get you going...

first thing you need to do it get the computers to be able to see each other.

make sure these protocals are installed on each pc.
icp/ip
ipx/spx
netbeui

also, make sure some kind of client is installed.
most common is
client for microsoft networks
or some thing like that.

next, make sure both computers are on the same workgroup. It doesn't matter what it is, but they both must be the same. at the same time make sure there is a computer name for each computer, and they can not be the same...

ok, last thing, for the computers to see each other, each computer must have a share enabled... (a folder, drive, or printer)... this will make the computer visable when you go into network neighborhood...

ok... now, for ics...

go into the 2k pc and and enable ics...
to do that you'll have to go into help and search for help on it, i don't know enough about it...

i got the hub installed.
I installed the hub modem software on both pcs already.
the network was working fine when i had win 98...so was i able to share the internal modem on the main pc. now i have 2000 and a cable modem and it went crazy.

i didn't realize it was a cable modem... is it ethernet, or usb??
if it's ethernet, you'll either need a router (i use netgear's rt311) or one pc will need two nic's... one to access the cable modem, and one for the network...

you can't plug a cable modem right into a hub, it just wont work.

James- actually one pc is working fine..it's the other one that's killing me.
this should be simple, but somehow it got screwed up.
i plug both pcs to the hub and the bub to the modem.
both lite are on on the hub and the nic...so there is a connection somewhere. but not the internet!

You need a router as was mentioned before. Netgear R311 , Linksys , any brand will do... you can get one for less than $80 now.
What is happening is your cable modem is seeing your original pc (via the MAC address which you may have to spoof in the router) and giving it an IP address but your other pc is not getting an ip addy from anywhere. So they won't see each other... ever. Your cable modem will ignore the second pc, forever. You can actually add a 2nd NIC to the win2k unit and get both running, but right now the hub already has a collision domain from the cable modem-pc network. It would be an ugly solution, the win2k pc would have to be on all the time.. I would get a router.. did I mention that?
Get a router...it will make life happy for you.

Good luck !

Tom

Well- i guess a router it is!
btw, the win 2k is always on...does that change anything?
i did not think so!
so it was easier with win 98 and tel modem?
that sucks....
thanx all!!

the problem is that a cable modem doesn't work right with in a network like that, it is only able to ever connect to one pc... in this case, you would plug the cable modem into the router, then the router into the network...

as far as the cable modem is concerned, it looks like a computer... and as far as the computers on your network, the router looks like an internet gateway...

router is the best way to go...
