SATA and Windows XP

We have installed a few SATA based PC systems over the past few weeks - all of which were fine until just about yesterday, when users performed Windows Updates - after that the PC will not boot, not even in safe mode, and you can't even reinstall windows - access to the disk just appears to be causing the PC to hang - anyone suffered the same ??
