sahring folder on desktop

hi...

i have a workstation with windows vista 32bit, when the owner shared a folder on his desktop the sharing extends to the user folder, enable share to any folder in the desktop will make the user folder shared?????????????

any ideas plz.

Move the folder to a safer location like the Public folder.

u mean move the shared folder to the public folder, ok but why this is happening, sharing a folder should not make the root of it shared

Don't just check the Shared Permissions have a look at the actual NTFS File access permissions. Do so for the Shared Folder and the User Folder too.

You could also try removing the user from the Domain and then adding them back.

the path is :

c:\Users\username\desktop\test folder

so when the person do share the test folder, automatically the Users folder get also shared, is this normal in win vista?

Is the Sharing being set on the Folder via the actual Desktop, or by going to the Folder via the stated path? I wonder if that would make any difference? When you Share a folder the parent folders ought not to become shared too.

the difference is when you are in a domain and this is happening, the IT man will be shot on sight, if u know what i mean.

The desktop is just another folder. The only difference is that you see the contents of that folder and the public desktop folder on your screen. Other than that it is just the same as any other folder.

How is the sharing being set - from the cmd line or via dialogs? If from the cmd line, are you using CACLS or ICACLS, with what parameters?

Is there a symbolic link to the folder on the desktop or is the folder actually on the desktop that the sharing is being set?

Has the folder been given full access or just change and read? access?

the sharing is done by right click on the the test folder then shared this folder option with full control for sharing, as for the ntfs permission its read & execute + List folder contents + read.

on windows XP this is not happening but on win vista it is.

people look at the path

c:\Users\username\desktop\test folder

lets add another level

c:\Users\username\desktop\test folder\test 2 folder\test 3 folder


so when is share the test 3 folder which is the 6th level, the first level which is Users gets shared too, is this normal in windows vista, what i know is sharing a folder makes the content of it visible to the targeted user, but it wont inherit the sharing to the level 1 which is users.

i really don't want to install the system just for this, i already inform the client not to share anything on his desktop, but i need to know why this is happening..

it is show as shared, i did not try it, ill let u know.

It would be better practice to put the folder to be shared in a c:\Public\ folder area, and then have the owner use a Shortcut on his/her own desktop to access the folder. I used to run into folks who would have many folders, all full of large files, on their desktop, and then complain that their computer was slow. The solution - move the folders OFF the desktop, and put Shortcuts in their place.
