rsh takes long time (DNS problems????)

Hello Everybody,

We have here some new P690's, we configured DNS, everythings seems to work ok, but when I want to rsh to another system (SYSTEMA)in the same network it takes a long time to login (approx. 1 minute), nslookup hostname and ip works fine. The strange thing here is when I do a rsh to SYSTEMA.DOMAINNAME then I get the login immediately.

Anybody can help me with this?

but what about nslookup/nameserver on other host (whewe rshd runs) ?

Some things to look at:
- /etc/netsvc.conf
- /etc/hosts.equiv if you are trusting. FQDNs
- Is the host a DHCP host?

I still cant find anything, on all hosts works the nslookup fine, the host is SYSTEM1 and domain is COMPANY.NL, so when I do a rsh to SYSTEM1.COMPANY.NL then it works ok, but when I do a rsh to SYSTEM1 it "hangs" for about 30 seconds, while nslookup SYSTEM1 works fine!

Anybody some hints/tips?

Do you hve any firewall/router in between the two boxes which may be blocking a specific port?
I vaguely remember something similar a while ago, it was related to FTP connections doing the same, if I remember correctly it was some or other AUTH request which couldn't verify the client, it times out after 30 seconds, and the FTP connection completes. IBM Certified Specialist - MQSeries

No there is no firewall between this boxes, but here the connection isn't timed out, after 30 secondes I get the login prompt.....

Similar to the FTP login problem I had. Will scratch my head a bit, perhaps I can remember hat I did to solve it.

But what you said about the firewall that some port was blocked, this situation is not similiar to ours because we don't have a firewall between it, I think this has something to do with the DNS but cant find anything.

Reading through your problem again it seems you may be right about the problem being with DNS, especially when using a fully qualified domainname it works instantly.

What does your resolv.conf file look like? IBM Certified Specialist - MQSeries

Yes right, when I do a rsh to the full qualified hostname then it works immediately, in the resolv.conf is only the nameserver and domain filled in, when I do a nslookup with hostname as well as ip, it boths works ok!
