I need to know the overall procedure for adding more space to the root partition. I am a former unix admin who has been away from it for a while.

I can shutdown to single user mode and then do something with Fdisk, but what?

As a starting point, read up on the format / partition command. This will allow you to examine the disc to see if space is available to extend the root partition.

This is assuming that you are not using any disc manager software such as Veritas
