Hi.

does anyone know if it is possible to restore from a tape that has come from another system alltogether?.

thanks.

how exactly would you do this,

I have been trying to figure it out in backup exec 9.0 but can't work it out

Thanks.

Load the tape into the drive / library right click on the tape and select "inventory" once this has completed right click again and select catalog.

Backup Exec can only read media written in certain formats:

Microsoft Tape Format (MTF)
QIC113 (non-compressed only)
SIDF
ARCserve Format
Sytos Plus Format
Stac Image Option

Media from the following products can be restored with Backup Exec:

Backup Exec for Windows NT 4.x, 4.x, 6.x & 7.x (MTF)
Backup Exec for NetWare 4.x, 5.x, 7.x & 8.x (MTF)
Backup Exec for Windows NT Workstation 4 (QIC113)
Backup Exec for Windows 95 (QIC113 or MTF) and Windows 98 (QIC113)
Seagate Backup Director (SIDF)
Seagate Storage Exec (SIDF)
Sytos Plus, Sytos Premium (Sytos Plus)
Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows 98 backup applets (QIC113)
ARCserve for NetWare 4.x, 5.x, 6.x (native and embedded SMS tape format)
ARCserve for Windows NT 6.x
ARCserve 2000 for Windows NT or Windows 2000
Novell SBackup (SIDF)
Palindrome Backup Director for Windows NT and NetWare (SIDF)

hmmm, no tape appears for me to click on though.

Are yo using a single tape drive or libray???

If a single drive highlight the drive under the devices tab - the contents of the drive should be listed in the right hand window - right click and select inventory.

If a libray - insert the tape (make sure that it registers with Backup Exec by either doing a scan (if u have barcode labels) or by inventoring the slot the tape is in.)
(Select the slot right click and select inventory)

Cheers
