I had Oracle 8.1.7 installed on a MS NT 4.0 server. I had 4 database instances created on the server. We got some bigger hard drives in, so we decided to shutdown Oracle, do a complete backup of the system, install and configure the new drives, and then restore the complete backup to the newly configured system. Once this was completed, I looked at the DB's and all the services, etc were fine and I was able to log into each of them.

Well, then we had a networking error on that machine. The administrator ended up flushing the system and doing a complete reload again from the backup. Now, there are no Oracle services. The environment doesn't have Oracle in the path. If you go to the Start -> Programs menu, all of the Oracle applications are listed there, but they don't work. Oracle is one the HD's. There are no entries in the registry for Oracle.

Okay, enough crying. What do I need to do to re-register Oracle, recreate the services for each of the four instances, and basically get back to where I was before? I thought about reinstalling Oracle, but am not sure if that will harm anything that I already have created.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

On my way to Oracles site to see what I can find... "Alcohol is our friend, and it's about time we had more friends over."
