Hello
I'am using Arcserve2000 and usually the restore works fine. But if I want to restore a session that is no more in the Database, it doesn't work. What I do:

1. I mount the old Tapes
2. Then I want to restore by session.
3. I click to the Tree, that I want to restore
3. Then a get the message: Database was pruned, would you like to merge. (something like this)
4. Then I click yes, and the merge Job runs quite a long time.
5. After the merge Job finished, I still see no DATA on the Tapes. (sometime just a some, but not all)

Any Ideas what the problem could be??

Thanks a lot for your help!

The sessions that you want to restore were most likely pruned from the database because they were too old. Merging in the tape is exactly what you need to do.

By default not all of the information on the tape is merged. If you want ALL information to be merged you should create and run your own merge job. While packaing it go to the Merge options screen, Log tab and select Log all activity. Run the job and then reopen the restore manager and all the information should be there.

But be aware that the next time your prune job runs, it will prune out this information again. So use it right away or put your prune job on hold until you are done with it.

I forgot to mention that after merging the tape, there are CAT files in the ARCserve/temp directory. These will be merged into the ARCserve database at the end of the job and this may take a while to complete. Check to see if mergecat is running. If it isn't running and there are CAT files in the temp directory you can try running mergecat manually.

Ensure that following the merge, you close the restore window and reopen it.

Also, ensure that in the Activity Log, you actually see the merge has completed:

CAT Session 7 has merged

Thanks a lot for your help!! Now I could restore the files!!
