I am attempting to install a larger Hard drive on an SpacStation 20 machine. I have installed the drive and when I restart the machine I attempt to install the new os (Solaris 5.8) on it. I type boot cdrom and after a little bit I get the error message about the wrong "magic number" it seems then to continue to attempt to install the OS and then fails. What am I missing in the steps to install a new hard drive? Is there some type of formatting to be done first? Thanks.

Sounds similar to what I was getting when I installed a harddrive from an HP system (with HPUX on it) into a sparcstation. I then booted from cdrom, fired up a shelltool, ran format and "unpartitioned" the drive, meaning just zeroed out all partitions exept backup (slice 2) and marked them as unassigned (instead of opt, usr, etc). This may not be the fastest method, but it worked well.

Good luck.
