I have an aix version 4.3 box, that the print que got removed on. When i got to install a new printer it tells me that the virtual printer is still there. lpstat -t doesnt show anything at all. Is there a file where aix still keeps the name of the printer around? If so how do i remove it or where is the files? and ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

When you define a virtual printer, there are multiple files associated with the virtual printer. There are only 3 that matter. If you removed the queue without removing the virtual printer "say you did an rmque and and rmquedev, then you could end up with this problem, or if some smart guy simply removed the stanzas from /etc/qconfig.

The 'queue' is defined in /etc/qconfig and consists of two parts 1) a queue stanza, and 2) a queue device stanza.

If the backend is piobe or any of the script backends that call it, then it is also a virtual printer. The virtual printer definition files are located in /var/spool/lpd/pio/@local/custom and .../@local/ddi (digested version used by the backend). So if the queue is gone from /etc/qconfig and you still have a file here, you can remove the files. Also remove the status file from /var/spool/lpd/stat, and if there are any job description files because you didn't first remove all the jobs, remove them from /var/spool/lpd/qdir. Finally if you had jobs 'spooled' their could be termporary files in /var/spool/lpd (recieved from remote systems) and /var/spool/qdaemon that will have funny names. Don't erase files that are currently printing.
