Reduce backup time or size

with the old version of arcserve 6x. I was using a HP surestore DAT8 and one server was taking 8hrs to complete. I'm now using arcserve 9 with a overland storage LoaderXpress tape drive is it's taking 7hrs to backup. Is there anyway I can compress this time? Thanks
