HI

Trying to figure out a way to have the message that comes up when a print queue goes down not displayed to my users.
I want to direct it strictly to /dev/tty0

thank you

The message is probably generated from syslogd, which has a configuration file in /etc/syslog.conf. Here you can define what message levels, (warnings, critical, ...) are outputed to what destinations, (log file, specific user(s), device files).

I looked in syslogd.conf and see nothing for qdaemon.
And I don't know whether to add it or not, nor am i sure of the exact syntax.

You must to look for the [tt]lpd[/tt] source.

Try adding a line like:
[tt]

lpd.notice console
[/tt]

The separator between notice and console is a TAB character.
Then try [tt]refresh -s syslogd[/tt]

I hope it works...

Is it possible to send them to the syslog console and still have the messages go to the original sender?

MESSAGES for printers

A. Backend generated
1) Intervention required (e.g., printer out of paper). Sent to submitter of job. Controlled by virtual printer _si attribute (users, separated by commas, to get intervention messages; null string is job submitter), e.g., si=nobody.
or si=root
2) Backend error messages (e.g., use of invalid flag). Controlled by the virtual printer _A attribute, e.g., A=0

Are you saying that if I change syslog.conf to send them to the console they will still go to the sender because of the backend attribute? If so where do I set the backend attribute Learn something everyday or you wasted a day of your life.
