Hi all ,

I wonder if you can help me. We have a red hat 5 box that we want to monitor from a windows machine , the software we use requires snmp to be running on the red hat box. I have installed net-snmp on the box and the process is running ? Do I need to configure the snmpd.config with disk/processes parameters etc or will the process running just be enough?

Just to further add, If I just want the red had box to be monitored by the windows server , do I need the full net-snmp package installed on the red hat box or is there just a snmp process that needs to be running to monitor the server from windows? If so is it part of red hat or part of the net-snmp build?

Many Thanks

You'll want net-snmp and net-snmp-libs. net-snmp-utils is useful for troubleshooting.

You'll also need to edit /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf. It has a lot of comments describing the different sections. Disk monitoring is not on by default; you need to tell it which partitions to check.

Thats great thanks for your help. So just to clarify, net utils is uselfull but not necessary?

Also just to clarify, I need the snmp.conf file edited on my red hat box with its disk information, to view this red hat disk information via my windows machine, hope that makes sense?

many thanks

Correct. snmp-utils gives you things like "snmpwalk" and "snmpget" to run on the local system. Useful for testing that SNMP is working if you run into problems, but not required for remote monitoring.

Hi , sorry to bother u guys again. Still having problems getting snmp to work on red hat 5, I have installed net-snmp-5.3.3.pre1.tar.gz source (./configure make make install etc) and have edited the snmpd.conf , I expect this to be the problem area. Ca anyone suggest the correct way to start this snmp daemon after install as it doesnt say in the documentation? or I have missed it lol

many thanks again
