Hi

I am having problems with my Windows 98 - some of the hardware drivers are showing errors. However everytime I attempt to reinstall windows I get an error message right after the install wizard has been loaded that says that Windows cannot continue to load as there is a anti-virus program running that needs to be disabled in the BIOS. I have no anti-virus program in my BIOS (Laptop)!! Please help me!!

Thanks

Hans

Some systems as well as laptops (mainly newer models) have a virus program built into the BIOS to help protect the Master boot record. Check your BIOS very carefully to ensure you do not have one as well.

What model of laptop is it?

Jim

I have checked the BIOS numerous times. The strange thing also is that I was able to re-install on previous occasions and everything went fine. I have made no changes to the BIOS since the last re-install and now. Any other suggestions perhaps?

Hans

Have you tried running a virus boot disk? Incase a virus is infecting the system. Did you format or install over top?

My antiv-virus software doesnt record any virus. The laptop is a German model from the company Vobis.

Is the virus program running when you try to reinstall? is this an upgrade or full version. Do you use the laptop restore process or attempt to reinstall 98 manually?

The virus software is running yes, but that hasnt played a role in the past. It is a full version - the original cd that was delived with the computer. I am manually reinstalling it. The harware which is showing an error is: Primary IDE controller (dual fifo).

I've seen the error on several machines. Haven't been able to resolve it and it doesn't seem to affect anything. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Try Disabling the Anti-Virus before reinstalling. I am not sure if that is the problem but it is worth a shot. It sounds as if your Ant-Virus is Having trouble allowing Windows to modify the Master Boot Record.

Jim

have you checked the RAM? I have seen bad RAM mixed with good RAM cause things like this to happen.
Just My 2 Cents

try fdisk/mbr to rebuild the boot record this might help also i have heard of a program called zero fill which can clear up bad boot sectors

note the best fdisk/mbr is with dos 6.2

The Bios entry could also be called something like "write protect boot block". Check your BIOS again I am pretty sure something like this is in there as all the new Mainboards do have this option.

the dual fifo is the ide contorler if it is wrong then your cd and hard drive run at pio 0 in windows slowest speed you need to install the mother board driver which it sound like is not on your windows cd.

Hi

To all who were so friendly to help! The problem has been solved!! It seems that the external mouse which I have installed was causing some sort of conflict. Simply by starting the computer with the mouse unplugged rectified the fifo situation and allowed me to re-install Windows. Why or how this is possible I cannot tell you, but should you have a similar problem in the future, I would suggest taking a look at the mouse!!

Thanks again

Hans

Everytime I start my computer, it seems to start normal, and then all of the sudden it says that it is running in DOS mode, and if I want "Press enter=yes/esc=no" when I press enter, it starts over, and then it does the same thing every time. I asked a few people if they have any idea on how to fix it, and they said to try and do step by step or go to safe mode. When I think that I have it all figured out, and restart it does the same thing again. So instead of saying yes at the DOS part, I pressed esc to get to the C>. But before that it said that I was missing Command and Win.com. So I logged in under safe mode and tried to find them, and I was not able to find them. Then I asked a site on the internet, and they said to reinstall Windows 98, what do you think I should do?

Reinstalling windows wont harm your computer so feel free to give it a try.

every time i start my computer, before windows comes up, it says there is an invalid system disk. i think i may have deleted a systems file. my friend says to format a system disk from another 98 computer but i dont know of one. is there a place on the net were i can get a copy of the windows 98 system files?

Are you sure there isn't a disk in your floppy drive?
