Hey guys i got a few boxes where ive had to replace the PSU's and i wanted to ask if you guys knew if the those PSU's have a -5v rail? the PSU tester i got is cheap as hell, and it doesnt show that the -5v rail is responding. i dont know if Dell in its infinite wisdom has omitted this rail for some reason, but i cant get a Dell with a good PSU to show a good -5v rail, so its either the tester or the PSU. i dont have my voltmeter with me today, again! the last non dell PSU i bought and replaced in one of these babies, i had to snip snip snip the metal in the back to allow for the on/off switch that doesnt come on dell PSU's. im tryin to figure out a better alternative, but i dont know if one really exists.

-5 vdc is present on the 270 I just checked. On the M/B connector on the side with the clip, there's 3 black wires in the middle, a space, then two red wires. Both red wires had -5.

Suspect Lawnboy had his meter connected backwards.

Red generally is +5v.

White is the normal for -5 in ATX but I'm not sure about the Dells.

But it wouldn't surprise me if there isn't one. Hasn't been needed for anything in years.

yeah i thought the -5v was two or three to the right of the power pin. a white wire, but yeah, that dont mean Dell does it like that. they dont feel the need to follow form.

I measured that correctly.

<sigh> Guys, I took the trouble to go physically measure a GX-270 power supply installed and working...

I won't bother next time.

hey man i wasnt knockin ya, i was agreeing that considering that it was dell, i dont doubt that they fail to follow the standard form factor.

Nope, Dell doesn't stick with standard pinouts or wire colors.

Wasn't this true of older Dells, but now they follow the standard (past few years). I recently replaced one in a 3 year old Dell - standard power supply. I did call first to cover my rear before I ordered it.

well i think the pin outs are correct, just the wire colors are different and the PSU doesnt have a on/off. other than snipping out the metal, everything else was correct.
