Protection Error with NTKERN

Recently I installed some new software on my Windows 98 machine. Both games appeared to work fine but the next day I started getting Windows Protection Errors. So, like it told me, I rebooted.
Upon rebooting, I started getting the following error message.

While iniitializing device NTKERN
Windows Protection Error You need to restart your computer

I can get into Windows using safe mode, but i get the error message when i try to go in under normal mode. Has anyone ever heard of this error message?

I appreciate any input you may have.

Could be a few things.
Start by checking power management, then USB support, then possibly modem.
Keyboard, internet functions (corrupt DUN may be the culprit)...
