I am using MS Project 2000 9.0.2001.0219 SR1-1 on Windows XP. I am working with an mpp file of approximately 7,000 lines and usually when I go to Show Subtasks for any task, MS Project 'crashes' with a dialogue box saying "Microsoft Project for Windows application file has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

Most of my colleagues, using Project 2000/2003, working with the same file have no problems. Has anyone seen this problem and resolved it.

Thanks in advance
Chris

This can be the result of a corrupted file.

To eliminate that possibility (and, yes, I did see that most -- but, from your statement, not all others aren't having the same problem with the same file) start Project and then

1. Open the file
2. File | Save as... and change the type to MPD.
3. Exit Project
4. Start Project
5. Open the MPD file
6. File | Save As... and change the type to MPP.
7. Exit Project
8. Try opening the file and see if you can work with it now.

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, I tried following the steps that you suggested, but it failed with the same error during the Save As MPD step.

Hmmm.

How about getting one of the people who *can* open the file, to do the steps I outlined above?

You could also compare the operating environments in your machine and that machine. Perhaps you have a resource hog (like Notes) running and the other person doesn't.

Ctrl+Shift+Esc brings up the task master or you could use a variety of other tools to determine exactly what is running in each machine.
