I tried to install the flash plugin for mozilla, but it doesn't seem to be configured right, because when I try to open up a flash program, it says either "you need to install flash" OR "nsapi error: bad browser input".

Is there a way to uninstall flash before reinstalling it? I wonder if theres a way for me to check/test my flash installation to see if its installed?

The flash install will just drop plugin files into the plugin directory. There will be a system wide directory for the browser and also user specific ones in their home directories.

Sounds like the plugin could have dropped the files in, say, the netscape plugin directory whereas you need them in the mozilla directory.

On my debian system, the netscape plugin directory is:

/usr/lib/netscape/plugins

and mozilla is:

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

The files concerned seem to be:
flashplayer.xpt and libflashplayer.so

Though they are symbolic links to a specific directory. If it's the same on your's for one type of browser, you may want to add sym-links for the other browser from it's plugin directory.

Thanks for the excellent tips! Strangely, when I choose the "about plugins" menu option, it lists flash v6 as installed. And those xpt/so files are in place. Yet it doesnt work! I am clueless! Oh well I think I have done all I can do. :-(

Check to make sure that the mime types are set correctly. When the browser prompts for the missing plugin it'll say something like: missing plugin for x-flash.

What does it prompt for and what does the browser have set in it's mime types? It might be that flash 6 has a different/incorrect mime type set for it.
