I am a new user of Filemaker Pro 8. Although I tick the "Show vertical scrollbar" box in Portal setup, the scrollbar does not appear. Neither do new rows appear when entering data which is what I understood should happen. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong?

Portal scrollbar

Since you're new FM I'll start with the simple stuff.
1. Portals are for displaying records from related table. Do you have a table that is related to the one with the portal?
2. In FILE > DEFINE > DATABASE (Relationships Tab) if you click on the connector between the two table occurences, near the bottom you should see "allow creation of records...". Read each side carefully and check the proper side.
Question; do you see any records in the portal at all or are you just having trouble creating new portal rows?

Yes the relationships are all correct and the portal works to the extent that I can enter and display data. But if I specify eg 4 rows then that is all it will allow me to enter and no vertical scroll bar appears despite ticking that box when setting up the portal. However if I set the portal field as a drop down it will allow me to enter multiple items beyond the 4 rows - but I still cannot scroll to see the ones disappearing at the top.

Yes I do. I've finally solved this today. I didn't have enough items in the portal for the scroll bar to appear. It would seem that you need at least 10-12 - at least that is the case with drop downs where I was experiencing a similar problem. This isn't mentioned in the manuals/help - but simple when you know. Thanks

Translation is what you just found out....
There are other 'encryted' item descriptions in the manual....
