Hi, I've been having trouble for some time now and I've tried everything and don't know what I can do to try and get to source of the problem...

The problem looks like it might be the port mapper but I'm not sure? This is the error message I get when trying to contact the suse ftp server.

Could not mount the source medium.
mount: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Unable to receive

I don't know if it's related but I have trouble accessing ftp files from my windows systems to?

Port mapper is running as default on port 111, I've stpped the service and still got the same error as when it is running

Anyone have any ideas?

FTP doesn't use the portmapper. What's this sorce medium it can't mount??

To me it looks like you have something on an NFS drive but the NFS service has died.

Thanks for your post it's the first reply I've hadin weeks and a few different forums...

I'm trying to upgrade SuSE 8.0 to 8.1 and get this message when I try to connect to the SuSE ftp site. I downloaded the whole of 8.1 (5.5gig) and specified the loaction on the HD but still got the same message?

Ok, so you've booted from the installation CD when this happens??

It looks like you've specified an NFS installation instead of an HD installation. Could that be it??
Why do you try to contact the SuSE server when you've downloaded the whole distro??

The whole story so far.

I bought SuSE 8.0 on CD/DVD installed it fine from the CD's it's up and running with no real problems, I connect to the internet and my windows systems connect through it fine, all other services are ok.

I then thought I'd upgrade it to 8.1, this I tried using Yast2. In Yast2 I specify system update and the first time I tried I specified the FTP details as instructed from the SuSE site.

ftp.suse.com
/pub/suse/i386/8.1

and then when I clicked go I got the error message. I tried a few variations of the address bvut the same error.

At this point I thought there may be a problem connecting to the FTP server so I went there in Konqueror and manually downloaded all the required files (a couple of days)

Afer the download had completed I tried again but this time specified the location on the local disk and still got the same message? Tezdread

I can't remember how the SuSE installation goes but it definately looks like yast is trying to access an NFS server.

Can you track this?? Try 'netstat -finet' and 'tcpdump'/'iptraf' while running this.

iptraf looked like it gave the same results as above. What should I be looking for? Tezdread
"With every solution comes a new problem"

Oehmmmm... Sorry, I wasn't clear.

Linux netstat uses the 'A' option instead of 'f' as I said, so:
'netstat -A inet' is what I was looking for.

The tcpdump command is a standalone command. Has nothing to do with netstat. IF you're not used to read the output it's a bit difficult.

iptraf is also a standalone command. Just type 'iptraf' and <enter>. iptraf makes tcpdump look prettier. Can't remember the interface but it should be possible to see UDP or NFS packages.

Hope it helps.
