Hello, Strange one but maybe not for you guys. One of our smaller offices is undergoing massive refurbishment so all servers have been switched off including the files server since the end of June due to constant power cuts.

The users have a local offline copy of all documents stored in their network directory which is enough work till the file server come online again at the end of the month. The workstations are XP. I got a call today reporting that one of the workstations is not booting. Tried to boot it myself and failed so I took out the hard drive and hooked it up via a usb to ide adaptop to my laptop in order to access all the data.

The problem is that the user has been accessing, amending and saving offline files on the standalone machine for over a month and all I can find is a bunch of shortcuts to these documents all pointing to the home directory on the server. In other words all docs created and ammended do not seem to be anywere on the hard drive apart from the shortcuts pointing to a file server that has been off since the end of june. The dates on the shortcuts sugest that these were worked on as recently as yesterday. How is this possible? There is no link between the workstation and the server even if it was on due to new cables being put in. Any ideas or is this just crazy talk to you?

Any help would be very welcome.

Kind Regards,
BigTM
