I presently have cable but am getting rid of it and I have the old modem that I was using before the cable and i am trying to install the drivers for this modem but windows 2000 professional does not recognize the modem I keep getting the answer that it cant find the driver for this PCI Simple Communications Controller does anyone have anything that can help me with this issue.

I've had this one on my system. The PCI Simple Communications Controller is the 56K software modem, if you install the drivers for the modem it will be recognised properly.
In my case, it is a Conexant 56K one, just put the modem driver CD in your system and let the Add New Hardware wizard search the CD for an appropriate driver.

If not, go to:

to get the appropriate driver for your modem.

Sometimes even with the right driver 2KPro's wizard can't find it in the file you load it to (or disk you designate). In this case a driver with it's own setup works. Just run the setup file, and 2K will recognize it next boot. had mine.

I would replace any software-based modem with a hardware external modem.

It seemed like a good idea, and they can work. But if you are using dialup get a good external modem (and cable). They are not very expensive.
