When overflow calls reach a 5420 phone they line appearance button shows that the phone should be ringing (a flashing bell appears next to the underlined appearance button). The phone does not ring but it should. If the phone is picked up the incoming call is connected. What might cause a phone in an overflow group to behave this way? The line appearance buttons are set to immediate. 4412 phones in the same overflow huntgroup ring just fine.

They should be set to Appearance not Line appearence, if they already are and that was a mistake do normal calls ring OK?

Yes, it is 4.2. And yes the action is set to "Appearance" and Action Data is "Immediate".

Up until today this was not an issue. No changes have been made to the phone system via IP Office Manager for over a week (that the administrators are aware of anyways).

Then you have a line appearance
Make it a call appearance

I have had funny problems with 5420's ringing in groups on 4.2... had two 5420's in a sequential group and the second phone would ring very quietly at the same time as the first, when it should have been silent. I think it may well be a bug. Because as you say there is no reason your phone should not be ringing.

@tlpeter, on 4.2 you only get Appearence, Bridged Appearence and Line Appearence no "Call Appearence" and all have the Immediate/delayed/no ring option visible

It is set to "appearance" and not "line appearance". I mistakenly called it a line appearance button on my first post. The label is named "line" and the action is "appearance", but it is not set as a "line appearance", just an "appearance".

Try it without the custom "line" label just with the standard a,b,c , daft I know, but worth a try.

The ring mode is set to "collective". The overflow mode is set to "group". All phones that are 5420 do not ring. There are three 5420 phones and two 4412 phones in the hunt group. I have tried resetting the phone switch, and resetting the phones. This didn't help.

Changing the label didn't fix the problem. Maybe I'll try recreating the huntgroup.

Do you have a 5410 handy to see if that rings? I'm still thinking bug.

I don't have a 5410, but I could probably borrow one from the Avaya dealer in town. Changing the huntgroup did not work either.

It was late after a long terrible day :)

I have some interesting results. I plugged a 5410 phone into the phone switch and had the same results. Next I logged into one of the 4412 phones with an extension that was part of the override group. The phone did the same thing - it would not ring. So now it had to do with the way the buttons were programmed and not the type of phone. I found that at one time having the three "appearance" buttons (programmed as immediate) followed by 7 "line appearance" buttons set to "No ring" worked fine and the phone rang with no problems in overflow mode. Now the only way I can get the phones to ring in overflow is to remove the "line appearance" buttons. However, the overflow group wants to see the status of the first 7 lines, so I'm still going to try and find a fix.
