Outlook attachments will cause no response

A user is trying to access an Excel email attachment but causes their computer to not respond. The file is roughly 5MB and the user has over 10,000 messages that should be deleted. Outlook 2000 SR-1 (9.0.0.5414).

I've reset, compacted, and deleted email headers. I'm not sure if I should go and update the SP or the SR. Any thoughts?

Can it be opened without locking up a different computer?

yes. The user is able to access their mail through a web mail service and download the attachment. I was recommended to try a network speed test.
