Tippers,

Outlook 2003 on Vista. Just moved over an installation with three accounts. Same installation works on the original computer--this is my travel machine and I am sitting in Europe with no Send/Receive!

All account settings tested out ok and are correctly configured.

What happens when I hit Send/Receive? Pretty much nothing. So I want to see what's going on with Send/Receive settings.

I hit CTRL-ALT-S to "define Send/Receive Groups." Again, nothing happens.

I am not that familiar with Vista, but I navigate to the folder:

C:\Users\nyny\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

My thought is to delete the .srs file and force OL to create a new one. I see no .srs anywhere on the machine.

Reinstalling OL is certainly something to consider, but I don't travel with an Office CD...do you? :) I'd like to see if there is anything I can do before I start trying to figure out where to buy a copy of Office 2003 here!

Thanks for any thoughts.

Does Outlook indicate that you are in Offline mode?

Also make sure any ports that are needed are open. Are you use Exchange our POP3?

Hello, I may have an answer for the 30 second delay on send/receive.

Go to the following menus/choices.......

Tools, options, mail setup, send/receive, edit, account properties.

This should bring you to the Account Properties Screen.

Here you want to ensure that "Automatically detect connection state" is selected and that Manual.... is not selected.

Once I made this change send/receive work perfectly for me.

Hope this helps !!!

Thanks,

Drew

Thanks for the responses. I believe I am in online mode since when I go to File, the option "Work Offline" is available (suggesting I am online).

It is a Pop3 setup. I can telnet out on the necessary ports, so I don't think that's it.

Tools, options, mail setup, hit send/receive...and can get no further.

Cannot find a description of such behavior anywhere on the web. I did detect/repair and Outlook did its thing without complaining. Used this same copy of OL (with appropriate licensing!) for my other computer and it's worked ok.

Seems like the entire send/receive function is completely hosed up.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Here are some possibly interesting developments.

1) I bought Office 2007. It did virtually nothing to fix the issues. OL2007 behaves exactly like OL2003. THAT was an expensive little adventure (over 100 Euros).

2) I bought a membership to a worldwide SMTP server. As you know, many ISPs block access to the ISP's smtp services from those out of the country. So even though I am a legit customer, I couldn't use my ISP. This worked to a degree. I can now send emails.

I still do not receive incoming emails and I have this odd send/receive behavior where I can't even get into the S/R settings.

Does this spark any thoughts? Thanks.

Well given the issues you are having you might want to have your email provider forward your email to a personal account like hotmail. One other suggestion is if you have a Terminal Server or desktop back home set it up there and RDP into it, providing port 3389 is open.

One thing I have learned over the years is if you're in a situation that is temporary then a temporary quick fix works.
