Thanks bomboy, but my db accessability is limited. The db guy for our .net app created a wrapper that only allows sql statements. I can't create my own custom connections and objects in order to access the ado property.
It's very odd to me that setting this prop via sql appears to be non-existent... oh well, typical I guess, eh? It's ALWAYS something.

you could always just insert NULL's I've adopted that pollicy and love it.
When I used to allow 0 len characters i'd get hung up in my where clause sometimes. half the time the value would be "" and the other half it would be NULL which are both different values.
WHERE value = "" or value is null
if you don't allow 0 len you don't have that problem.
