hi do any of you have any suggestions or explanations on how to do this - i have the 80 gig mac mini and want to swap the 256 with a 1 gig of memory. thanks.

Best way is with a couple of wall paper scrapers or anything with a wide, thin blade and handles at right angles. I'm at work so can't check, but pretty sure either macworld.com or xlr8yourmac.com had an illustrated step-by-step guide on opening a mini. Otherwise google will no doubt assist.
Unless you've got it already, crucial.com is one of the best memory suppliers - decent quality and reasonably priced.
If you're worried about damaging it, take it to an apple store and prepare to pony up apple prices...

Go to Macworld.com and search for Mini. There's an illustrated article on opening the thing up from when it was introduced.

I've done this -- it sounds awful (like you're breaking it), but it's how it's done.

If your putty knife isn't sharp enough, you can use a pocket knife to get it started.

but if you do, for g*d's sake, mind your fingers! It is, by all accounts, easier than cracking open an ipod to change the battery/hd.

You mean, you're supposed to have more than 7 fingers???
