I have a computer using Win 2000 Professional, that I am trying to install Office 2000 Prof. As soon as I put the CD in the drive it automatically starts the 'setup' program then immediately reboots the computer. It also reboots when I try through 'start' 'run' 'setup' or when I am able to get to my explore and click on 'setup' the computer reboots. Any ideas??

What does happen after automatic reboot?

I take the CD out it just boots up to windows as normal. If I don't take the CD out it reads it again and reboots.

More than likely there's something causing a fatal error in the setup program, and your machine is set to automatically reboot when that happens (it's the default in both 2kPro and XP.) You can disable this by right-clicking on My Computer, select Properties, click Advanced tab, click Startup and Recovery, and then clear out the check box for "Automatically Restart". This will probably result in a blue screen of death error message, but at least you can start diagnosing it.

Please take no offense, but would this be a "downloaded" version of Office? If so no need to respond, but you may have a data flaw in one of the setup files that's causing a major error to take place. Other possible causes would be a media problem (scratch on CD or something else). You might try copying the entire contents of the CD to your hard drive and installing from there, but you'll likely get the same error if the media is damaged.

Good luck, and let us know.

Thankyou. I have spent hours on the internet trying to find a solution ... and finally found this web site. I finally have some place to start.
The CD's I am using are backup copies of my originals. I recently got a CD burner so figured it best to keep originals in a safe place. Not being as familiar with Win 2000 there are settings I am not aware of. Will give it another go this evening.
Thanks.

I disabled the "auto reboot", tried installing Office 2000 and did get the death screen. Before the machine rebooted, the error read: "STOP Unexpected-kernel-mode-trap
Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk"

I was able to install Office 95 with no problem.

Ideas?

Do you have any errors related to Windows Installer in the event logs? Did you try installing other .msi installation program and do you have the same problem?

I have not checked the event log. I am not very familiar yet with w2k .. since I am using 98. My involvement with this computer is through my friend. They got the Klez virus on their computer that is on w2k and is the computer that runs their network of 3 other computers (that are on 98). I was able to clean off the virus on all computers ... but to completely do that I had to delete some stuff on their C drive as there wasn't enough room to load the virus program. So we moved Quick Books to the D drive which has lots of room. (DId an uninstall and reinstalled on the D drive.) Some of the MS programs would not uninstall on the C drive through the uninstall program so I just had to delete them and run the doctor program to clean up the registry. I wasn't too concerned about getting rid of it as I planned on installing Office 2000 on the D drive.
However, I ran into the reboot problem on trying to install the Office 2000. ( I am not sure whether Quick books or office 95 or Norton Systemworks are .msi programs.)
I did get Office 95 installed and an upgrade to Word 97. However - and I'm sure they are related - this computer keeps rebooting itself now - which takes the network down.
Help please.
