NT 4 Locks Up

My NT 4.0 SP6a has started locking up. We have to power cycle the server and everthing is normal for several hours.
Checked the events viewer and there is no erros or anything unusual.

Reinstalled the SP6a, updated the video drivers, checked for Viruses, system partition has 1.8 GB available, ran diagnostics on the motherboard and memory and they passed. Heat not a factor, cool room and fans all working.

I am not sure how to setup performance monitor and what to look for and why. Does perfmon keep a log every few minutes or so that I can check after a lockup?

Are there any server utilities like Norton systems works but for servers?

Any ideas?

What services are running on your box? File, Web, Print...? Do you have the auto updates running, and if so, are they configured to auto install?

Let me know.

Rgds,

The only services that is running that didn't come out of the initial install is Norton AV 8.0 Corp and it has be running for about a year and a half. This machine is just used for file and print sharing in an office with 21 workstations.

FYI: Yesterday I ran diagnostics on the NIC and found no problems. However I went in to check the settings from the control panel/network and the server locked up before I could do anything. So I have replaced this DLink DFE 530+ card with another card, 3com 3c509b and am monitoring. So far it has been running all night with Hot CPU tester running all night and it has not locked up but I did not test this way with the old NIC.

Let me know if you have any ideas!!!

When was the last time a Microsoft patch was applied. Are you running the auto update?

Joe, if you are still having this problem, maybe SysTrack 3.1 (Lakeside Software)could help you. In your original posting on July 26th you stated:

"Does perfmon keep a log every few minutes or so that I can check after a lockup? Are there any server utilities like Norton systems works but for servers? Any ideas?"

SysTrack has a Blackbox Data Recorder (BDR) feature that does this. Historically, SysTrack keeps a DB/log of about 40 counters, system statuses, alarms, etc. that can be used to give you clues in diagnosing problems like you are describing here. This DB is updated every 15 seconds by default, but this can be altered to give you more or less information until you can track down the problem. If you have already fixed your problem, then please disregard.

Cheers,
Mike

Are there jobs caught in your print spooler?
How do your printers talk with your NT machine via HP jet Direct or some other method?
Do printers have static addresses or are they assigned via DHCP?

No Jobs in the spooler. Printers have static IP addresses.

So far with the new NIC in the server it has not locked up in 5 days. I think I am gonna say the problem is resolved.

Thanks
