Ok I waited as long as I could. Kind of a tradition in
this forum to put on the tin foil hat and throw out your
pridictions for the up comming year. Here it is 01/22/2006 and not a peep. Is this a sign that we are all so caught up in the present that we can't see five years ahead?

A few years ago I made the pridiction that Neck ties were comming back. Ive seen it around the office (for the accountants, ceo, and marketing people) but not in the tech sector. repair personel, IT director, even me.
I even saw a recent article that IT personel are the worst dressed of any profession.

Last year outsourcing was the big long term issue, and it had a lot of folks in this forum feeling very insecure.

In vb.net's 2005 release i see that they have included a new namespace for hardware my.computer I think this will give vb a real leg up in retail as they are always looking for ways to hook point of sale to real time data apps.

I think the real inovation in the next five years will be in connected devices, the foundation has been laid, its time for me to have an application on my desktop that uses wireless to my car to report milage, maintanence (service engine soon light triggers desktop notify what needs to be done, ect...)

Ive seen a lot less flame wars between microsoft and lynux. Seems they have found a peaceful co-exsistance for the short term.

Okay folks, dust off the tin foil hats and lets see some new year's stuff.

if it is to be it's up to me

Game consoles will become a center point in a home network for the non-technical.

People will die in car accident caused by them watching streaming movies on their cell phones. People will be injured walking for the same cause.

I don't even want to think about what would happen if "adult" films are available to your cell or PDA.

Actually, we best hope we get adult movies on phones.

It was this industry which is credited with the Video and Internet explosion, so if it goes mobile, maybe it do the same for phones.
Ooooo, I've just had a vision:

How about you put in your details to the phone and if you pass a compatible phone using REDTOOTH (it'll happen), they start a vitual humping session at £1 a minute. (Copyright Stu 2006)

Oh, my prediction:

VoIP / IP telephoney will rocket in popularity, forcing the likes of Skype to make there services more compatible with other providers and protocols.

I suspect that "rocket" doesn't adequately describe what's going to happen with VoIP - though I'm not yet convinced that 2006 is the year.

I agree partly infintelo's predictions about the dress code of IT professionals.
I've recently started a new job. The operational IT staff wear anything from jeans and T shirt through to a pair of trousers and a shirt.
Working in MIS rather than operational IT, I'm not based in the same office as them, so have to wear a suit and tie so as to not look underdressed compared to my colleagues.

Since you mentioned flame wars between Microsoft and Linux, I predict Wine or Crossover will be standard on the Linux environment, making loading Win32 applications a snap to load, and choosing an OS is a matter of personal choice.

What about Vmware and virtual servers? My compnay is looking at replaceing up to 6 individual servers, by using Vmware, and 1 large server?

This is more like it....
say jmd0252, this is one that always comes around, almost as much as lynux vs microsoft, big central servers or dumb servers smart clients?

my IT director perfers big smart servers, i always saw this as a central point of failure. Why crash a whole company if the big one fails?
Of course its a lot more secure, and a lot easier to backup/trouble shoot. it just kills me when i get 33 calls for one machine getting a re-boot.

if it is to be it's up to me

We saw an IBM blades demo,, and I must say,, it was very impressive. The ability, to create a server, "on the fly",, was, impressive. It looks like we will be useing 2 virtual machines, with Microsoft SQL 2005 server,, with one machine, being the backup for the first.

Can someone please direct me to some scientific study indicating that dress codes improve productivity? I am not at my workplace to dress up. I am there to do a job and produce results. If I have to waste time and energy about my clothing, that just makes less productive.

I just loved trying to work on machanical devices (printers - copiers) with a jacket and tie on (me). When I submitted the cleaning bills to the company (toner is a pain to get out) they decided I could wear something less costly to buy and to clean.

Another company insisted I wear a long sleeved white shirt and jacket, in Miami, in the summer. Manager flew down to enforce the rule. The next day when I picked him up at his hotel, he was wearing a new white, short sleeved shirt and no jacket.

My prediction:
- Linux will rule the server market
- Windows will continue to dominate the desktop market and take our hard earned money
- .Net will continue to gain new followers against Java, unfortunately ...
- Embedded platforms software development will have a boom
- And, unfortunately, VB.net will continue to survive :(- . But this is the world in which we are living, a bitter one ...

Adrstan1,,

Question,, what is your alternative for the desktop??

Unbuntu or kunbuntu? Linspire? MacOS on Intel?

Well,, this should prove interesting.. So, if I understand you correctly. You want some version of Linux, or Unix, something else that does not cost a lot of money, for your desktop. No matter how difficult it would be for a corporate MIS group to support? (OK here we go), So you are a bunch of Microsoft bashers, that still wants a W(98) cd, you can pay for once,, and install 1000 times,,, and not pay Gate his fair due, because he is successful, at marketing a software product. The responses should be interesting.
