I have an Excel spreadsheet which imports data from an another spreadsheet. Until recently, data is refreshed everything flows in except for the figures. The column and row descriptions are there but have blank cells where the figures are supposed to be. What baffles me is that it used to work.

Appreciate it very much if somebody can help me.

Thanks

sorry - we're not mind readers - much more detail please

HOW is the query refreshed ?
HOW was the query set up ?
WHAT is the query ?
HAS the source workbook changed ?
HAS the destination workbook changed ?
What criteria are used in the query ?
Have these criteria changed recently ?

sounds like you have changed something that was in the criteria so that it doesn't match any more - have you finished a financial year ro re-organised your company structure or anything like that ??

Also...

exactly what do you mean by "figures?"

Figure: a NUMBER?

Figure: an embedded OBJECT?

Figure: ????????

Hi xlbo / SkipVought

HOW is the query refreshed ? Clicking on ! Refresh Data icon
HOW was the query set up ? Import Data wizard
WHAT is the query ? Importing entire spreadsheet
HAS the source workbook changed ? Yes
HAS the destination workbook changed ? Yes
What criteria are used in the query ? Importing entire spreadsheet
Have these criteria changed recently ? No

With figures I meant numbers. The source spreadsheet comes from a Powerplay (PPlay) report saved as Excel. If I create a new import data (instead of just refresh data), it's the same problem. It used to work. What is more surprising is, the problem occurs only with this particular set of spreadsheets. Other spreadsheets save as Excel work fine.

If I save the PPlay report as text file and use it as import data, it works okay. Probably, that's the option for me.

I would appreciate your comments on this "mystery".

Thanks guys

1. Import Data is usually applied to a TEXT file and not another Workbook. Consider using Data/Get External Data/New Database Query... and refreshing IT instead.

2. Does your column containg NUMBERS also contain TEXT? Could be a problem.

SkipVought,

Yes, columns contain text and numbers. It looks like by best option now is to save the PPlay reports as text and use the Import Data in Excel.

Thanks a lot.

Excel gets really confused when a TABLE has both text and numeric data.

yup - consistent data types are certainly preferable
