We have Arcserve 6.61SP2A running on about 15 servers throughout the US. A handful of them do not report a compression ratio. The files backed up are not already compressed, hardware compression is turned on and detailed job info is enabled in the job. Manually enabling compression in the job does not make a difference. The drives connected to these servers range from DLT libraries to 4mm DAT. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am having a similar problem where ARCserv is not compressing at all.

At the moment my next course of action is to recreate the jobs with Compression option enabled AND the tape drives(2 X Compaq DLT 8000's in a library) compression turned on.

Arcserv tends to turn thew drives compression off !

I will be doing this with fresh new tapes as well.

Let you know how it goes.....

I think the problem could be in tape drives. The drive must support "Media Remaining Capacity" message, it writes this into Activity Log then. If it does not, it does not mean the HW compression is not working, but you are not getting this info from AS. I am affraid the only method to verify that HW compression works is try out how many data could be written with and without HW compression enabled before tape capacity is exhausted.

Right. Arcserve will turn off compression in the job in lieu of hardware compression, at least that's what it reported in the log.

linca: I think you got it. Those servers not reporting compression are also not reporting Media Remaining Capacity. The other servers are. Good catch.

I have sorted my problem out with compression. It may be worth trying for you.

I installed patch QO19352

This is a patch for corrupt files but fixed a whole host of other related compression problems I was having.

I also had SP4, QO29368, QO22113, QO 27941 installed on the machine previously.

Thanks. But we're running Arcserve 6.61SP2A.
