We have an inherited Merlin Legend running fine but no caller ID information appears on any phone. Calls come in on POTS lines with (caller ID tested and working) to a 408GS/LS-MLX module. Auto attendant answers on the first ring, which could be the problem but when I try and add the LS-ID delay to our incoming lines I get the error beep. Any ideas?

The 408 GS/LS MLX module may not have Caller ID capability. You can check by looking in maintenance. Press menu, maintenance, system, inventory - you will first see the processor module info, press more to see the next module. If this is your 408 module - look at what the display says. If it says 408 GS/LS MLX - then you have no caller ID capability. If it says 408 GLM-U - then look at the application vintage. If it is 28 or above - you should have caller ID capability. If it is older - then the firmware needs an upgrade.

If it says 408 GS/LS MLX - then your only option is to purchase a Caller ID capable version of the 408 module. The newer ones will be labelled 408 GS/LS-ID MLX.

Caller ID won't work with an 408GS/LS MLX. You would need a 408GS/LS-ID/MLX module.

That was a pretty straightforward answer. Its just a straight 408 GS/LS MLX. I'll try and pick up a ID version. Thanks!

The 408GS/LS-MLX-ID reqiures an R7 processor to use the caller ID capability. Otherwise use the 800GS/LS-id for older releases.

Or - you can upgrade your processor software to R7 or Magix R4 - depending on vintage of the processor. To see what processor model and software version you are running now: press menu, maintenance, system, inventory - and the processor type (large, small, CKE3, CKE4) and software version will be displayed. If the processor is not at least a CKE3 - you cannot upgrade it to the version you will need for Caller ID - you will have to get a newer processor.

Interesting... My inventory on the processor module reports:
Board Processor
Hardware Vintage 00
Legend 4.2 V6.2

and nothing else. Can't find any information on processor type. I guess I should assume I'll need a newer processor unit? If I go this route is there any real benefit to moving to the Magix software? Looks like I can do this for a relatively small incremental cost but given that I have all the Legend manuals and we aren't using even half the capabilities of the existing system would I just be trying to fix something that isn't broken?

Well - you would get Caller ID capability - which ou are paying for - but not using every month. The Magix version of the processor software would give you a 2-line Caller ID display (name/number). The Legend V7 would give you a 1-line Caller ID (Number) . You would have to program a "toggle" button to see Name info. Of course you still need the Caller ID capable 408 MLX modules - but only for as many lines as you have - or just get one 800 GS/LS ID module - and keep your old 408 cards. You can still use the line ports for MOH or Paging. The Legend and Magix software is very similar - so most of your manuals would still be relevant - just more features. Plus the manuals are free at Avaya.com. If you have any ATL modules (BIS-style) phones - you cannot use the Magix software - just the Legend V7.

Excellent and comprehensive advice. I'll probably go with the Magix based on what you have said. We don't have any ATL modules. Thanks everyone.
