Hi

I am trying to change the password of a NIS client machine.
I use the yppasswd command then it asks for old NIS passwd
and gives me following error

Old NIS password:
3004-604 Your entry does not match the old password.
yppasswd: 1831-155 could not change passwd

Can some one help ps

All I can say is that to change a password using yppasswd you need to be able to enter both the old password and the new password. It appears as though you are not entering the correct password in the 'old password' field.

If you are logged in as a root user on the NIS server machine, you will be able to change the password without knowing the old one, but if you are logged into an NIS client machine, then you cannot change the password with knowing the old one.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the reply

I tried so many times. I am putting the right password. Something is not right.Hope U can tell me.

Do you have access to the NIS server at all? You would be able to change the password from there without knowing the old one.

I'm beginning to wonder whether your NIS password maps are in step across your NIS master server and NIS slave servers. It may be that your NIS master is down, and so your client is talking to a slave that has an out of date password map.

ypxfr should synchronise your password maps
