Network Printing 1

Hello,

I have AIX 5.1 and a HP laserJet Printer on the Network. I need to print to the printer without connecting it to the parallel port. I run

# smit mkquedev

and go to install HPJetDirect Port, but it prompts for installation as it's not yet installed. I tried with all the installation CD's it didn't work. Does anybody have any kinda clue or anybody can provide me with the JetDirect Drivers for AIX..?

i usually do 'smit spooler' -> Add a Print Queue
-> choose hpJetDirect
-> choose Hewlett-Packard
-> choose printer type
-> 2 Do NOT make this system a BOOTP/TFTP server
-> type in queue name and hostname

you cannot use an IP address, as far as i know.

The HP JetDirect Drivers are on the AIX installation CD.
You can always use: 'smitty install_all' and then do a search for printer or jet and go through until you find it. Once you've done that, the install is fairly straigh forward.

there i go not reading the question again. i found bos.svprint on CD 1, it is:
5.1.0.0 System V Hewlett-Packard JetDirect

the fonts are in bos.txt on CD 1. on CD 3 there are a load of drivers in printers fileset, for example:

Hi,

I found the JetDirect drivers on the CD. Thanks for that. I tried to install it and it said it is already installed. But when i try to add a print queue and point to the JetDirect it gives me the same error saying "Software to support the selected Printer type is not installed......".

That probably means that you installed the JetDirect software but not for the individual printer model.

Nop, I have installed the printer, but only this is that when I try to attach the printer tot aport, I don't see that JetDirect port at all, but I see the RS-232, Parallel etc etc.

Please help me,

hi,
finally is almost clear your problem: you have not
installed HPJetDirect driver

insert cd #3 in cdrom (however every cd is good)
smitty printers
Printer/Plotter Devices
Install Additional Printer/Plotter Software
Press F4 and choose /dev/cd0
Press again F4 to choose which printer
choose
4.3.3.? Hewlett-Packard JetDirect Network Printer Attachment

I have a 433, but I belive is similar.

Then follow suggestions of previous posts.

Thank you guys. I have able to install JetDirect Driver. I was tired of finding in all the CD's as to where it was. Neither could I download those, because of the cometetion between HP and IBM, HP doesn't have it in their site.

you can find System-Sw for AIX only on aix CD; example:
printers.hpJetDirect.attach 5.1.0.0

From IBM web site, you can download fix = major version
of drivers or programs; example:
printers.hpJetDirect.attach 5.1.0.6
