Network path not found’ problem

I have 3 computers in my home network.
A Desktop, ASUS, running XP Home/SP3 which has 3 drives holding all the data I wish to share.
A Laptop, DELL, dual-booted with XP Pro/SP3 and Windows 7 RC 7100.
A Laptop, ACER, dual-booted with XP Pro/SP3 and Windows 7 RC 7100.
They all belong to Workgroup, HOMENET7.
The 2 Windows 7 systems are connected by Homegroup as well.
All the systems happily share data EXCEPT I cannot access the XP systems on the ASUS and ACER from the W7 system on the DELL.. the machines show in ‘Computer->Network’ but double-clicking them gives ‘Network path not found 0x80070055’.
I tried everything I can think of, including re-installing Windows 7 on the DELL but it still doesn’t work.

Please help whilst I have a little hair left ;-)

Does 0x80070055 mean The local device name is already in use? Have you got duplicate IP Addresses or Machine Names?

Check out any firewalling you have setup.

Try your luck from "Safe Mode with Networking" too.

Sorry, typo, meant 0x80070035 network path not found.

No machine names or IPs are conflicting.

Check your DHCP settings, alternatively give them all static IP's...

then in your firewall add all the IP's (or whole IP range your home network is in) to the TRUSTED SITES...

Also check if the Remote Registry Service, on the XP machines, are set to DISABLED, if so, then set them to Automatic (Manual should work as well)...

Start the Remote Registry service if the service is stopped. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the XP computers, click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. In the list of services, double-click Remote Registry.
3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
4. Click Start, and then click OK.

Network Path not found" often turns out to be a firewalling problem. Besides your Firewall, other anti virus software suites often include hidden firewalling components.

Ok, Mea Culpa, I'm an idiot .. I had Threatfire installed and although I had disabled it in Startup, the service was still running and causing all the problems.

To err is to be "human" to err twice in the same post is "super human". Mistakes are what we learn by, at least that is how I do it.

Glad you found the problem...

although it was a forehead slapper, it does teach us a valuable lesson...

and as linney pointed out, to err is human, but to really screw things up you need a computer... ;-)
