hello,

I need to get this website up and running yesterday and the pamphlet that came with the software is a bit light for my tastes. Where can I get more detailed info such as... if the crystal APS is accidentally deleted and a new one is created - how do I modify the login? I am getting errors on bad username/password. When I first put the APS together, I totally stumbled thru it and selected NT login and then something later on said I needed something installed so I believe that I made a bit of a mess.

I also need to password protect these reports. There are going to be quite a few and only certain users can see certain reports. Is there something built into enterprise that can regulate this or do I need to buy an add-in?

I am also looking for tips on why my report runs fine locally on the iis server but in the field it gpfs IE6 when I open it?

I am using Crystal 8.5 developer with enterprise 8 (I think that is what the APS said) . And since I am very pressed for time I am hoping for the cliff notes crash course.

TIA for any help.

Given the breadth of your questions and the timeframe, I'd suggest hiring a consultant.

-A Crystal APS is accidentally deleted: Meaning that you deleted the service on Windows, or did you elect not to use services and deleted an EXE, or?
Sounds like it's time to reinstall and prevent hacks from playing with it...

-I totally stumbled thru it and selected NT login: RTFM, at least to the point that you understand what choices are being offered. Enterprise security or a combination sounds best, then you can add each user manually, which provides a GUI to step you through, as opposed to having to understanding security, NT, privileges, etc.

-I also need to password protect these reports: Reports aren't password protected, reports are available or not availble depending upon which users you decide to allow to use them. Unlike a simplistic security model for files in an operating system, CE intelligently allows you to make reports unavailable based on the user, or what group a user is in.

-I am also looking for tips on why my report runs fine locally on the iis server but in the field it gpfs IE6 when I open it?: Many things might cause this, inclusive of not applying the patches, database used, connectivity used, bad report writing, etc.

Cliff notes:

If you accidentally delete a service, check the other NT services used for CE to determine what logon was used.

Select Enterprise security unless you understand something about NT security.

Passwords are at the database level, which makes sense, and when you add a user with Enterprise security, you can then add that user to those able to see the report (or add the user to a group and assign the privileges based on a group), or even assign combinations of privileges based on user plus th group or groups.

Your report may not run on CE for lots of reasons. Using a UFL, writing a bad report can cause it to read too much data and exceed the temp file size in Windows or exceed other limitations, etc.

If you're not sure about the version of the products you're using, you will certainly benefit from hiring someone with experience and the patience to help train someone unwilling to read or hit F1.

Selecting the defaults will get most people up and running quickly, so try that.

oh to have the time and cash for that. Wouldn't that be grand?

I have read the docs that I have found on the CD and Business Objects verified that it is 8 standard. I have cleaned up all of the boo-boos (basically uninstalled and started over). For some reason, I cannot open the management console. I get the dreaded cannot find server or DNS server. Of course I verified the settings of DNS

This server has 2 NIC's in it which I know can be a problem but the admin disabled one of the NIC's.

The report that I am trying to use does run fine in IIS but accessing it thru IE6 is not working. This report has parameters and the gpf happens when the parameters are opening. I saw something in the docs about client side viewer but I did not see any detail. Is that something that needs to be installed on every machine?

I just wanted to say thanks for you trying to help me. It turned out that the server had SQL connectivitey installed for something else that the IT dept. forgot to mention and once I removed that, all was good.
