I have a client with an NEC IPK and DTH-16D-1 phones. Is it normal to make internal and external calls from the speaker and be able to hear the called party, but not be heard until you pick up the handset? Would a HFU solve that problem?

You need to turn on the speaker phone feature for each phone. CMD 4-29.
