Hi guys,

I have Visual C++.net Standard installed on my computer, which includes MSDE (under Win2K Pro). Now I have to use the MSDE for a project involving a website with a database behind it.

The documentation says that when I simply install the MSDE it will be set up to use the PC's administrator account for general access. It also says that I can create new databases in MSDE using MS Access.

I get to the point that I can see that the service is running (as well as the Service Manager), but if I want to create an ODBC connection or a new database through MS Access, I always get the error message "Server not found or access denied", even though I am logged in as Administrator.

Can somebody please provide me with a pointer to what I am doing wrong (or not doing at all that I should be doing) ?

Thanks
wolfiesz

Did you install a default instance?
Look in the registry for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
to see if there are other instances.

You can change it to allow sql server logins by changing the registry entry
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/MSSQLServer/MSSQLServer/LoginMode
to 2
= 1 integrated security, 2 mixed

you should then be able to login as sa with a blnk password.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

Hi Nigel,

thanks for your advice. In the meanwhile I have solved the problem. I did have an instance installed, but that wasn't the problem. The whole trouble got fixed nicely once I installed the service pack 3a from Microsoft (using the exact way as it is described in the documentation).

I am now using the Win NT authentication to log in and all is fine.
