Recently the curser from my PS2 ball mouse began to lock. Assuming that one more rodent had bit the dust, I went out and picked up a Compac Optical, removed the first to update the drivers. Worked for a couple of days, then began to freeze again. The computer responds to left/right click. Curser only is frozen.

USB mouse works.

Here the question:

What is the probable cause. Hoping it is not the mother board, but if it is, I should probably know it. (Memory seems to be all right).

Suggestions appreciated.

Is the Compaq mouse USB or PS2? If it is PS2 you might try to make friends with someone who has a USB mouse and see if that fixes your problem. Then I would find another friend with a KNOWN working PS2 mouse and see if it works. If they both work you just had a severely bad case of coincidence.

USB works. Old ps2 and new ps2 freeze. Also my backup ps2 freezes. That is, mouse works (right/left click). It's the curser that freezes.

I have one more thing to try. It is on an extension chord. There could be a whacked out wire.
