I've seen the "normal" clear plugs (the RJ12 & RJ45 Variety) and I've also seen the same plugs but they are a darker plastic just about black, I'm told the Clear is for Stranded Wire and the Darker is for Solid core wire. Is there a actual referance that says this somewhere ?

its amanufacturer thing ,

used to be solid wire where concave where the wire entred the plug and stranded was flat but I dont know that is still the case .

you just need to buy from a reliable source and go by the manufacturers designation

While it does not cover the color of the connectors, the following thread, over on the Cabling forum has everything you might want to know about solid vs stranded plugs...

There are plugs that claim to be specifically designed to work with either type of cable. Seems to me those are the best to have around.

One more thing - stranded cable should only be used for patch cables. And it is generally acknowleged that making your own patch cables is not worth it in terms of both time and reliability.

Good luck.

I must say I learned something once again, like Skip555 says its a manufacture thing, the simplest was of describing the "rule of thumb" if the Contact has just 2 points, it should be only for stranded Wire, irrugardless of clear or dark color, if on the other hand there are 3 points then it is ok for solid, of course one still needs some care in making the ends that you put it in the right spot.

TYCO/AMP makes modular plugs for both solid and stranded cables, available in six and eight position type plugs.

Hope this helps!
