Is the only difference between the MLS 12D and the MLS 18D the amount of programable buttons with LEDs?

Can a MLS18D be used for system programming?

I don't think the MLS-12D has the backlight, and the MLS-18D makes you unscrew the base and flip it for wall mount (a true pain to tuck the line cord in for a standard wall jack)

Yes, you can program from either set type.
