This is related to another problem I've been having (I think)with a dodgy drive.

thread528-867265

Since this happened my USB2 HD mp3 player isn't working quite as it should on this machine (works fine elsewhere)

Basically you can still access it, but it doesn't show in 'My Computer', or Autoplay and so forth. If you plug it in and punch the drive letter into Explorer you can still use it. Wierd! Any ideas, or should I just sort out my dodgy HD first?

Cheers

Bill

Not sure why it would happen on it's own, but it is possible to hide drive letters from explorer. Among other tools that do this you can download TweakUI from microsoft
Check to make sure the drive letter is not hidden.

If not has the drive letter changed sonce you started experiencing your other problems?

Perhaps you can see if any of these help with your player. A quick glance reveals some have problems after formatting drives.

Have you the USB update mentioned in the following thread?

why doesnt xp pro recognize usb drives after installing SP1?
thread779-837163

Some other things to look at.

823293 - Drive Icon and Drive Label That You Selected Do Not Appear When You Connect a Removable Media Storage Device to Your Computer

307070 - Windows XP Does Not Recognize a Q. USB Hard Drive

297694 - New drive or mapped network drive not available in Windows Explorer

How old is your hard drive, is it under warranty?

Thanks a lot guys, gpalmer711 got it, for some reason the drive was disabled in TweakUI.

I think the drive letter had changed or something, the player took that letter and then dissapeared.

It's an iRiver H120 by the way, I well recommend them!

Cheers

Bill.
