Migrating to CRM 4.0 from 3.0

I am in the process of migrating our CRM from v3 to 4 and frankly its giving me nightmares.

The facts

Server 2003r2 fully patched
SQL 2005 fully patched

SQL 2005 and CRM 4 have been installed on a new server, no problems but when i go to import organization wizard and point it at the old CRM 3 server it says something along the libes of Cannot find CRM database on that server.

OK, so i have tried copying the database to the new server and trying to import it from the local SQL, again not working... cannot find....next i backed up and restored the database to the new server....cannot find

What can i do? ive been trying for days to get this sorted, why cant CRM 4 see the CRM 3 databases

Am i going about this all wrong?

i hate to ask a stupid question - but have you used the migration manager?

Upgrade your existing CRM 3.0 system to CRM 4.0 then import than to move it.
