MIcros E7 Network over VPN?

I have a E7 server in my datacenter. I want to use my WS5 term in my office and connect to server. I have VPN tunnel using old router setup. The WS5 can ping the server. CAL was able to load the E7 software from server as I provided the IP in CAL. Now the WS will not start E7 ops as it cannot see server DB. Is there a place to hard code the IP in a file like in 3700 MDSHOST.xml? What is the E7/CE equivalent? Can I do a host file entry on CE? If so, what name do I use? Server name or workstation ID? Dr.Zogg, please rescue me!
