We'd like to have a cube that shows current inventory levels and sales for a varying timeframe. Is this possible? Can the inventory measure be set up to be static (always showing the current day) and sales to display based on the time dimension that the user selects?

Thanks in advance

Yes.

Define Time State rollup on inventory balance measure's properties Rollup tab to be Last period. Also uncheck on all of the Time dimension's levels Generate all categories in the period.

Then user sees inventory balance of the last period of the time dimension while sales in for the whole period, even though you bring in inventory balance for each month.

For example filtered by a year, user sees sales of the year, and inventory balance of year's last month or(/same as) last day.

Notice, if you have day level, all of the inventory balance values in data source must have as date the last date of the month. So for December, you have to have the date 12-31, 12-30.

Couple of "unless.." there, but it the big picture.

Cheers

This is not just my "wild idea", it is how it should be done in Cognos docs too.

Looking at the description for last period, I'm not sure that it will work.

"Shows the measure value from the last subordinate period in the time period being examined."

The problem is that we might want to look at current inventory, but sales from last year. The current inventory would not fall within the "time period being examined".

Ok, time dimension can't ever show different periods for different measures, never. What I do is that I have two inventory balance measures (logicly I do), other one being Current inventory balance, which has not Last period definition.

Current inv.b. is coming in in a datasource of it's own, where you must not have the field giving the date of your time dimension. In Time dimension's Allocation tab, make sure your measure is allocated as Constant. Now your Current inventory balance always shows the current value, no matter what time period is filtered in.

Great. Sounds like that will work for me. Thanks
