mask inside a button

Is it possible to mask a layer inside a button? ie: mask the over effect. Cos when I try it doesnt actually mask, i just see the black area I created as the mask.

create a MC symbol in the 'over' state? put the mask effect inside the MC?

or create separate MC to act as your button and just use a 'hit area' button to control the MC?
