Many problems on new G5 OSX

I recently bought a new G5 (Panther 10.3) and have yet been able to use it! My problems are many, and while I have been working on Macs for over 12 years, I am new to OSX and haven't days and days to sift through all the forums and find the answers. This forum is excellent! Problems are:
- Every time I restart my system preferences have changed/things moving around/disappearing.
- Running Quark 4.1 on Classic does not work. Does not recognise any fonts at all (either from Fontbook or Suitcase X1 in OSX mode.) LOVED tjimoblack's tip on converting to R&W in the info panel - but need to run 100's of fonts and cant keep them all in the system folder)
- Cannot find a postscript printer file or my Adobe pdf file to create pdfs!

This is the most expensive I-Tunes Computer ever!

Running Quark 4.1 on Classic does not work. Does not recognise any fonts at all (either from Fontbook or Suitcase X1 in OSX mode.)

Note that Quark in Classic mode is only viewing the fonts in OS9's System Folder/Fonts. The fonts that OSX uses are found elsewhere: Library/Fonts and Users/[you]/Library/Fonts. Make sure that the font management programs that you use are also activating fonts in the Classic OS9 font folder. You may be best suited to upgrading Quark 4 to ID3 or Q6.

You need to install Suitcase and ATM Lite AFTER the Quark install.

Postscript printer file? Explain.

Thanks heaps - that all makes sense. I do have Quark v6.1 however one of my film houses only accepts v4 due to their imposition program. I will load in the older Suitcase in Classic and see how that goes.

Other probs:

- Postscript Printer file: I just want to create a postscript file from Quark. I used to use "AdobePS" or "Create Adobe PDF" in system 9 but cant find these ... I will search on the net for a postscript printer driver for osx

- system prefs moving/etc. An example is if set my finder to view "by columns" - then when I restart it has changed to "icons". Doesnt seem to "lock in" my changes. Also some folder icons (i.e. custom ones that I have changed in "get info") just dissapear after a restart and the standard icon is back.

- does anyone know where I can find an old update for Quark from v4.1 to 4.3? Have searched and searched on the net but cant find.

I have a G4 and would have a lot of the same problems you have except I have a dual boot of os 9.2 and os X. It's too bad that you can't boot os 9 on a g5. That is the only reason I bought a g4 instead of a g5.

Hi SuAndMac, If your having problems with the operating system ,open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder,select First Aid tab and run "verify and repair disk permissions" then "verify disk and repair disk" If not all the options are available you will need to restart from another drive or OSX cd, then try.
If you are the administrator of the computer, make sure no other users have access to the system preferences. This way only you can make changes. As for your font problems you need an OS9 font management program. Try to get hold of Suitcase 8, this should work fine. You do not need a postscript printer driver for OSX as you can print to PDF from any application.
There is no such thing as quark 4.3 only 4.1, next came quark 6. Ask your film house if they will accept a PDF instead of quark 4 file. (any worth their salt should) Good Luck. Tex.
